Invoice vs. receipt: what is the difference?

An invoice asks to be paid. A receipt proves you were paid. Most businesses need both, at different moments.

    The short version

    When you need each

Send an invoice when you deliver work or goods on credit, for example to a business client paying within 30 days. Give a receipt when you are paid on the spot, or after an invoice has been paid, so the customer has proof for their records or expense claim.

In the generator above, switch the Type between Invoice and Receipt: the same details are reused, and the receipt gets a PAID stamp.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a paid invoice the same as a receipt?

Not quite. A paid invoice shows a zero balance, but a receipt is the document that confirms the payment date and method. Many customers and accountants ask for a receipt.

    Is InvoiceCrisp really free?

Yes. You can create and download unlimited invoices, estimates and receipts for free, with no sign-up. The free version uses the Classic template and adds a small "Created with InvoiceCrisp" line at the bottom. Pro removes it and adds more templates, saved clients and history.
